Asthma Clinical Trials.

Our asthma clinical trials focus on understanding how the common cold affects asthma sufferers. Through our research, we aim to create new medication which can reduce the severity of asthma attacks before they start.

By volunteering for our paid asthma clinical trials, you’ll help us further understand cold viruses so we can develop better treatments for all asthma sufferers.

How do asthma clinical trials work?

Our trials typically last between 11-15 days. You will reside in our state-of-art quarantine facility in Canary Wharf and you will be given a private room. Each en-suite room is equipped with a range of amenities including a flat-screen TV, PlayStation 5 and WiFi to make your stay with us as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible.

During the clinical trial, you will be given a diluted common cold virus. We will then administer a new medication or vaccine that will have passed thorough safety tests. The effects of the medication will then be monitored to assess its effectiveness in fighting the virus. You may experience some mild cold and flu-like symptoms, however, you will be monitored under close medical supervision throughout the duration of your stay.  Some volunteers will receive a placebo, which means they might not receive the virus or drug. Using a placebo allows us to measure the effectiveness of the active drug. You will not be told if you have received the placebo, however, you will still be compensated for your time and your participation is still valuable to the study.

Am I Eligible for a paid Asthma clinical trial?

If you have asthma and regularly use an inhaler, you could be eligible to take part in our asthma clinical trials. Through a rigorous health screening process, we’ll assess your eligibility and match you to a suitable trial.

We take great care in matching our volunteers to an appropriate study and only accept the lowest-risk volunteers. In addition to a review of our volunteer’s medical history, we also carry out the following screenings:

  • Blood sample
  • Urine sample
  • Height and weight measurements
  • ECG (an electrocardiogram to listen to your heart’s rhythm)

Once all stages of the screening have been completed and have been assessed by our doctors, you will be invited to join FluCamp as a volunteer. For any questions related to eligibility, please contact us.

Asthma Clinical Trials FAQs

The safety of our volunteers is paramount and all clinical trials at FluCamp are conducted to the highest standard. Any trials where we administer an investigational medicinal product or vaccine are regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.

As the flu can be more severe for asthma sufferers we do not place asthmatic volunteers in our flu clinical trials. Instead, we have created specific trials for asthma sufferers which aim to understand how the common cold affects them, whilst exploring the effectiveness of potential medications and vaccinations.

The amount of compensation you receive will be dependent on the clinical trial you are matched with. Our independent ethics committee will determine the amount you will be compensated and this will be communicated to you within the informed consent form before you participate in the trial.

We also contribute towards any travel costs incurred during our screening process. For your first pre-screening appointment, we will reimburse £40 and if you are eligible for the second stage of screening you will receive a further £70.

  • Taking part in a clinical trial can offer many benefits, and we know our volunteers sign up for various reasons. Our testimonials show just some of the motivations for people to sign up. Whether studying, working, or taking a break from both, FluCamp gives volunteers the benefit of being cared for in every regard whilst having plenty of ‘me-time’. FluCampers also choose to stay with us because they like to use the compensation reward towards travelling, a house move, or just for a financial boost.

We run clinical trials because we are dedicated to finding a cure for viruses like the flu. We welcome all fit and healthy volunteers, and appreciate what they are doing to aid our work towards finding a cure!

  • You can take part multiple times! You can do a trial with us every 3 months*. If you’ve taken part previously, and completed quarantine over three months ago you can re-apply via email at [email protected]. *Please note this is dependent on trial availability and participant eligibility.

  • We take great care in matching volunteers to an appropriate study. Once you’ve been invited to join FluCamp we’ll give you a detailed explanation of the trial we’ve allocated you to and then it’s up to you to decide whether to take part. Your choice does not impact on whether you would be eligible to take part in any future studies. FluCamp has a very strict health screening process to ensure that we only accept the lowest risk volunteers. As part of our volunteering process, we will check your medical history, and do some current blood, urine and ECG tests to establish your suitability. This allows us to make sure we are only recruiting volunteers who are healthy.

  • You can register with us at anytime! Before booking your first screening appointment we would recommend that you have good availabillity three months following this as this tends to be when the trial will take place. We know there may be some times in the year when volunteers have other commitments that may clash with FluCamp dates. If you can give us as much notice as possible, we’ll try our best to schedule visits and studies for times that you are available.
